Field Study Charleston

Spring 2024

Built in 1878, the Williams Mansion is a landmark on the Charleston Peninsula representing the grandeur of the Gilded Age. The historic residence is known for its unique architectural style and prominent features - a grandeur that bleeds across the ornate columns of the porches to the baroque ornamental gardens.

I spent the semester exploring traditional Charleston architecture and garden design solely through studying the Williams Mansion and its gardens. This field study was about strengthening my ability to translate what I see with my eyes to drawings that communicate those details. My focus was on the exploration of different graphite techniques like hatching, shading, and perspective.
